Contacting the Police in an Emergency
Many counties and states are implementing the ability to text to 911 in order for the d/Deaf and hard of hearing to contact police in the case of an emergency. However, this has not yet been implemented in most places. Check to see if your county has this ability. The easiest way to do this is to simply Google “Text 911” and your state or county. Otherwise, check the spreadsheet provided on the federal page to see the areas supporting this service.

If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech disabled, and text-to-911 is not available, use a TTY or a telecommunications relay service, if possible. If these options are not feasible, have a hearing friend or neighbour make the call.
If you cannot speak and need to call 911, proceed as follows: Call 911, wait for an answer, then use your telephone’s keypad to “talk” to the dispatcher. Press 1 if you need police, 2 for fire and 3 for an ambulance. If the dispatcher asks you questions, 4 means “yes” and 5 means “no”.
