Regina deaf-led film nominated for Sask. Independent Film Award | leaderpost

Jo Weber says the film “Fable Deaf” is a response to world issues as experienced by someone navigating life as a deaf person.

Weber, artistic director Deaf Crows Collective, is a deaf researcher and educator. She said the film features an all-deaf cast and characters, some sign language and complimentary aesthetics. The inspiration behind the film came from some of the issues the collective was seeing within the deaf community on local, national and international levels.

“There’s just a lot of division, a lot of fighting and a lot of organizations struggling to stay afloat because of all of this internal division,” said Weber.

She added the film is something of a “cautionary tale” against the factionalization of communities and people.
