QR Code-Enabled BSL Memory Game Launches in UK to Boost Sign Language Learning | EdTech Innovation Hub

March 18, 2025

The Sound Waves Foundation, a UK-based charity, has launched a British Sign Language (BSL) memory card game, aiming to make sign language learning more accessible as demand for its afterschool BSL clubs continues to grow.
The game, which costs £12.99, is available through the charity’s website and is designed to help both hearing and deaf children learn everyday signs through interactive play.

The launch comes as the charity faces a shortage of qualified BSL teachers in the UK, which is stalling the expansion of its popular afterschool BSL clubs.

How These Deaf Gamers Are Making ‘World of Warcraft’ More Inclusive | Rolling Stone

December 4, 2024

For all its joys, gaming can be really hard. Take massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), a popular genre whose many overlapping systems often require a constant stream of information being blasted at the player. Unlike, say, first-person shooters like Call of Duty, MMOs aren’t about twitch-based gameplay or fast reaction times. They’re about working together with other players (or occasionally, against them) for a common goal, whether that goal be to gather resources or defeat an enemy too powerful to take on solo.

Launched in 2004, Blizzard’s World of Warcraft is one of the biggest and most culturally known MMOs, and to this day maintains an extremely healthy player base. In the 20 years since its release, the game has grown exponentially, with ten full expansions and even relaunches of its classic modes beginning in 2019, building toward an outright massive amount of content for players to explore alone or with others.

As with every game this size, however, there’s a certain barrier to entry. MMOs, especially, require a lot of communication to complete a task or a quest, with some members creating “guilds” to put like-minded people together. For differently-abled gamers, this presents a problem. It can be extremely difficult to coordinate with teammates or partners who don’t understand them or their individual needs, especially in the heat of the moment mid-game.

That’s where the Undaunted Guild comes in. Undaunted Guild is a group of players from the deaf and hard of hearing community whose goal is creating an inclusive environment for people to play World of Warcraft. Through the guild, a tight knit community has formed, with members making personal connections, communicating with Blizzard directly on improving their accessibility options, and leaving a lasting impact on each other and the game that they love.

ASL Aspire wants to gamify STEM education for deaf kids | TechCrunch

November 30, 2024

Poor literacy skills have plagued the deaf and hard of hearing community for decades. The median literacy rates of deaf high school graduates have languished at a fourth-grade level since the turn of the 20th century, according to the National Center for Special Education Research. Bringing STEM concepts into the mix — the vocabulary for which is limited in standard American Sign Language (ASL) — only gives deaf kids yet another obstacle to success.

That’s the problem Illinois-based startup ASL Aspire, one of the startups that presented at TechCrunch Disrupt’s Startup Battlefield 200, is hoping to solve with its game-based approach to STEM education.

The team at ASL Aspire works with deaf scientists and mathematicians who are standardizing STEM-based vocabulary in ASL to create curricula for teachers to integrate into their existing lesson plans.

Deaf gamers can see sounds thanks to Holland startup | mlive

September 23, 2024

Audio Radar creator Tim Murphy wasn’t out to create a video game product for deaf gamers, but now they’re some of his biggest fans.

Audio Radar, the latest product from Holland-based startup Airdrop Gaming, incorporates a system of light signals fitted around the user’s TV screen synced to in-game sounds, giving enhanced spatial awareness, particularly for deaf and hard of hearing gamers.

The system is compatible with PC and the latest gaming consoles. It works best with shooting and survival games that incorporate 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound, according to the company website.

Murphy leverages experience as a U.S. Navy radar tech of six years. He also worked in product design and brand development for 12 years at Whirlpool Corp.

He also is an avid gamer and would stay connected with his former Navy buddies via Friday-night Halo games.

Unfortunately for them, Murphy would often bring an advantage to their gaming sessions in the form of an LED suctioned to the center of his TV screen that functioned as an aim assist.

“My friends could tell I was using it, because I was better than I typically would be,” he said. “I would never aim at people. I would just run-and-gun, shooting from the hip.”
