School in Milford offers ASL as a world language course | EYEWITNESS NEWS
American Sign Language is a course that’s gaining popularity in grades schools, but many middle schools in the state don’t offer it as a world language course.
In Milford’s Harborside Middle School, however, it’s being offered for the first time.
Harborside Middle School has it.
Talking in the class is minimal. The focus is on the hands.
“We learned the alphabet, how to spell our name and sometimes we do activities,” said Harper Kranyak, a 6th grader.
Harper said she’s always had an interest in American Sign Language.
“Me and my friend, when we had sleepovers, we would always go on my computer and search up on my computer how to do sign language,” she said.
Now, she’s getting to learn not only sign language, but about the deaf and hard of hearing.
