📚✨ 5 Classroom Hacks for Teaching Deaf Students

Hearing teachers: You DON’T need to be fluent in ASL to create an inclusive classroom! Here are simple strategies that make a HUGE difference:

🎯 1. THE POWER POSITION Always face students when speaking. Avoid teaching while writing on the board or walking around. Your face = their access to information!

👀 2. GET THEIR EYES FIRST Never call a deaf student’s name from behind. Instead:

  • Flick the lights once
  • Tap their desk/shoulder gently
  • Use a visual signal the class agrees on Teaching the whole class to use these = instant inclusion!

📝 3. VISUAL EVERYTHING Post daily schedules, anchor charts, and instructions with BOTH words and images. What helps deaf students helps ALL students learn better.

🤝 4. THE BUDDY SYSTEM 2.0 Pair deaf students with a reliable note-taker, but rotate buddies monthly. This builds community while preventing one student from carrying all the load.

⏸️ 5. PAUSE WITH PURPOSE After asking a question, count to 5 before calling on anyone. Deaf students processing through interpreters or captions need that extra beat.
